Wingfield’s Year 7 team progressed to the fourth round of the English Schools Cup with a sensational 9-6 victory at Wickersley on Wednesday evening.
With the scores tied at 6-6 following Irfan Bogle’s last second free kick to take the game into extra time, a calm and measured final 14 minutes saw the boys score three goals to get past the third stage of the nationwide competition.
In one of the most enthralling matches the Academy has ever witnessed, Wingfield took the lead four times at 2-0, 3-2, 4-3, and 5-4 before trailing 6-5 late on.
But with the last kick of the game, Irfan Bogle’s free kick gave the boys the least they deserved with a period of extra time, before three goals saw Wingfield eventually sail through the third round of the competition.
Adrian Nguea scored four goals, Jack Dudhill and Irfan two apiece, with Maddox Brooks also on the scoresheet.
The fourth round draw will be made on Monday 19th November.
