Course Description

At GCSE you will learn to communicate to a level where you could get by in different situations and communicate with people in a Spanish speaking country. You will study 3 different themes incorporating the following topics:


Theme 1: Identity and culture

  • Relationships with family and friends
  • Marriage/partnership
  • Social media
  • Mobile technology
  • Music
  • Cinema and TV
  • Food and eating out
  • Sport
  • Customs and festivals in Spanish speaking countries and communities

Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest

  • Home, town, neighbourhood, region
  • Charity and voluntary work
  • Healthy/unhealthy living
  • The environment
  • Poverty and homelessness
  • Travel and tourism

Theme 3: Current and future study and employment

  • My studies
  • Life at school
  • Education post-16
  • Jobs, career choices and ambitions

Assessment Format

There are 4 formal exams at the end of Y11 in MFL: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Each paper is worth 25% of the overall grade.

  • The course is worth 1 GCSE grade.

Possible Progression (including careers and further education)

With a GCSE grade 6+ you would be able to follow AS/A2 Spanish courses at college.
A GCSE in MFL is always useful when applying to universities.
